| Why
does chiropractic treatment work?
As human beings we are equipped to be self-regulating and
self-healing. Our nervous system is an amazing pathway that
runs through every part of our body. Through it flows both
the signals that work our body and those that let us know
if our body is working correctly. The interference of these
signals by improper motion or position of bones, which is
known as a subluxation, can reduce the ability of our nervous
system to function, which in turn can impact the proper function
of organs, muscles, our cardiovascular system, and many other
parts of our body. By adjusting the position and patterns
of movement of these problem bones, chiropractors can relieve
specific patient problems and improve how our bodies work
overall.
What is a subluxation?
A subluxation is the incorrect position or movement of one
of our bones. Subluxations can be caused by physical injuries
like falls, automobile accidents, strenuous exercise, new
exercise programs, and repetitive motions. They can also be
caused by stress, illness, alcohol, drugs, poor nutrition,
and genetic defects.
How do I know if I have a subluxation?
Unfortunately, many people mistake subluxations as normal
aches and pains, or a range of other ailments. Many people
also have minor subluxations, which produce no obvious symptoms.
The only truly effective way to identify a subluxation is
to have a through chiropractic examination.
Will subluxations go away if left
untreated?
Sometimes. Today's hectic lifestyles are a constant
source of subluxations. Fortunately, our bodies have the ability
to self correct many of these problems as we bend and stretch,
or when we sleep at night. When subluxations don’t resolve,
you need to see a chiropractic doctor!
What is an adjustment?
The adjustments a chiropractor makes involve quick, focused
thrusts that are designed to move bones which have moved into
improper positions back into their correct positions. Adjustments
are given using many methods depending on the patient and
their subluxation. These methods include the doctor’s
hands, special instruments, and the combination of gravity
and special tables.
Are all patients adjusted the same
way?
No, each patient, and any subluxations they may have, are
different. Your chiropractor will evaluate your body type,
and the type of subluxations you have, and determine the best
method for treating each problem. In fact your chiropractor
may use different methods on each of your subluxations depending
on how severe they are, and where they are located along your
spine.
Can I adjust myself?
No. Merely making your joints "pop" is not an
adjustment, and is likely only the movement of hyper-flexible
joints surrounding a subluxation. In fact, this continued
movement of the hyper-flexible joint may cause damage. Adjustments
are focused and take years to master, and once mastered are
still virtually impossible to perform on yourself. Your chiropractor
even has to consult another chiropractor to be adjusted.
How many adjustments will I need?
It depends on the types of subluxations each patient has
and their treatment goals. Many patients feel better within
a week or so, following frequent office visits. However, if
you want to maintain the proper positioning of your bones
more adjustments are usually necessary. This is because your
spine needs time to readjust to the proper positioning and
to stabilize. The ideal treatment plan includes frequent visits
in the first week or two, followed by a few weeks of single
visits, and after that includes maintenance treatments every
month or couple of months.
Can I have Chiropractic Care after
back surgery?
Yes, but you should fully inform your chiropractor of the
extent of this surgery. Your chiropractor will avoid the affected
areas, and will be able focus on the areas above and below
which are often indirectly affected by surgery.
Can patients with osteoporosis get
chiropractic care?
Absolutely. Your chiropractor will evaluate of your particular
health issues and develop a treatment plan targeted at your
problems, which will make use of the methods most suited to
you.
How long until I'll feel better?
Maybe after your first adjustment. Many patients sense improvement
very early in their treatment, however the time required to
get to your ultimate goal (i.e. no pain, full range of motion…etc.)
will vary depending on the severity of your subluxation, the
length of time you have had it, and your overall health.
How long will I need chiropractic
care?
This decision is really up to you. Many patients decide to
continue occasional treatment to maintain the gains they have
achieved. Others achieve their goals and discontinue treatment.
However, experience shows that patients who continue occasional
treatment maintain their gains better, and are able to identify
future problems earlier and therefore need less treatment
later on.
What insurance do you accept?
We accept most insurance plans, but coverage for chiropractic
care varies between individual plans. We will work with you
to see if your insurance will cover your chiropractic care,
and we have flexible payment plans to accommodate you if your
insurance will not cover chiropractic care.
